Environmental conservation is one of the most important topics in modern science because it deals with the survival of our planet and everything living on it. As human beings, we interact with our surroundings every day. We breathe the air, drink the water, and use the soil to grow our food. However, if we do not take care of these resources, they will become damaged or disappear entirely, making life difficult for us and future generations.

1. Understanding Environmental Conservation

Environmental conservation is the wise and careful use of natural resources to prevent them from being wasted, damaged, or exhausted. It is a planned way of managing our surroundings so that we can continue to enjoy the benefits of nature while ensuring that the environment remains healthy for those who will live after us.

Conservation does not mean we should stop using natural resources altogether. Instead, it means using them in a "sustainable" way. For example, if we cut down a tree for timber to build a house, conservation teaches us that we should plant at least two more trees to replace it. This ensures that the forest does not disappear over time. It involves protecting plants, animals, water bodies, the atmosphere, and the soil from the negative effects of human activities.

2. Reasons Why We Should Conserve the Environment

There are several vital reasons why environmental conservation is a priority for every citizen, especially in a developing nation like Nigeria.

A. Preservation of Biodiversity The environment is home to millions of species of plants and animals. Many of these plants provide us with medicine, while animals are part of the food chain that keeps nature in balance. When we destroy forests or pollute oceans, we kill these species. Conserving the environment ensures that these organisms do not go extinct.

B. Maintenance of the Water Cycle Our water sources, such as rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers, need to be protected. Trees and vegetation play a major role in the water cycle by releasing moisture into the air through transpiration. Without conservation, water sources can dry up or become too polluted to drink, leading to water scarcity and diseases.

C. Prevention of Natural Disasters Human activities like cutting down trees (deforestation) and blocking drainage systems often lead to natural disasters. In many parts of Nigeria, the removal of vegetation has led to severe gully erosion and flooding. By conserving our forests and managing our land properly, we can prevent these disasters from destroying homes and farmlands.

D. Ensuring Human Health A polluted environment is a breeding ground for diseases. Air pollution causes respiratory (breathing) problems, while water pollution leads to cholera and typhoid. By conserving the environment and keeping it clean, we reduce the spread of germs and ensure that we breathe fresh, clean air.

E. Economic Benefits Many industries depend on natural resources. For example, the furniture industry needs wood, and the fishing industry needs clean oceans and rivers. If we exhaust these resources, many people will lose their jobs, and the economy will suffer.

3. Common Environmental Problems

Before we can conserve the environment, we must identify the problems that threaten it. In our local communities, several issues are causing harm to our surroundings:

I. Deforestation This is the permanent removal of trees to make room for something besides forest. This could include clearing land for agriculture, building houses, or using wood for fuel (firewood). When trees are removed, the soil is left bare, leading to erosion and the loss of habitat for animals.

II. Pollution Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances (pollutants) into the environment.

Air Pollution: Caused by smoke from factories, exhaust from old cars, and the burning of refuse.
Water Pollution: Occurs when chemicals, oil spills, or sewage are dumped into water bodies.
Land Pollution: Caused by the improper disposal of non-biodegradable materials like plastics, nylon, and glass.

III. Erosion Erosion is the washing away of the topsoil by water or wind. In Nigeria, especially in the Southeastern parts, gully erosion is a major problem that swallows roads and buildings. This happens when the soil is not protected by grass or trees.

IV. Desertification In Northern Nigeria, the desert is "moving" southwards because of overgrazing by cattle and the cutting down of trees. This makes the land dry and sandy, making it impossible to grow crops.

4. Practical Ways to Conserve the Environment

Conservation starts with individual actions. We can make a big difference by changing our habits at home and at school.

A. At School

Proper Waste Disposal: Students should always use the dustbins provided. Avoid littering the classroom or the school field with biscuit wrappers and plastic bottles.
Tree Planting and Gardening: Schools can organize "Green Clubs" to plant trees and flowers. This beautifies the school and protects the soil from erosion.
Switching Off Lights: Ensure that all classroom lights and fans are turned off after school hours to save energy.

B. At Home

The Three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle):
- Reduce: Buy only what you need to reduce waste.
- Reuse: Instead of throwing away plastic containers, wash them and use them to store items.
- Recycle: Sort waste so that items like paper, glass, and metal can be processed into new products.
Water Conservation: Do not leave the tap running while brushing your teeth or washing dishes. Fix leaking pipes immediately to prevent water wastage.
Safe Waste Disposal: Avoid burning refuse, especially plastics, as this releases toxic chemicals into the air. Instead, use designated waste collection points.
Use of Clean Energy: Where possible, use energy-efficient light bulbs (LEDs) and reduce the reliance on noisy, smoky generators.

Example 2 (Waste Management): Instead of a student throwing away an empty plastic "Zobo" bottle, they wash it and use it to take water to school the next day. This is reusing, which reduces the amount of plastic waste in the environment.
