BEST START INTERNATIONAL ACADEMYMATHEMATICS JSS 1 Topic: Whole Numbers, Place Value, Ordering, and Properties of Whole Numbers
Welcome to the exciting world of numbers! In this lesson, we will explore whole numbers, understand how the position of a digit gives it value, learn to compare and arrange numbers, and discover some fundamental rules they follow.
1. What are Whole Numbers? Whole numbers are the basic counting numbers starting from zero. They are positive numbers without any fractions or decimals. Think of them as the numbers you use to count everyday objects. Examples: 0, 1, 2, 3, 10, 500, 1,245.

2. Place Value Every digit in a whole number has a "place value" based on its position. This tells us how much each digit is worth. Moving from right to left, the place values are Units (or Ones), Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, and so on.
Example: In the number 5,273

3. Ordering Whole Numbers Ordering means arranging numbers from smallest to largest (ascending order) or largest to smallest (descending order). We use special symbols to compare numbers:
To compare two numbers, first, look at the number of digits. The number with more digits is usually larger. If they have the same number of digits, compare the digits from left to right until you find a difference. Example:

4. Properties of Whole Numbers These rules describe how whole numbers behave under addition and multiplication.
Commutative Property: The order of numbers does not change the result.
Associative Property: The way numbers are grouped does not change the result.
Distributive Property: Multiplication distributes over addition.
Identity Property:

Imagine you are a shopkeeper counting your daily sales. You count ₦2,500 from morning sales and ₦3,750 from afternoon sales. You use whole numbers to represent these amounts. Understanding place value allows you to easily read and write these figures. The commutative property of addition tells you that adding morning sales to afternoon sales (₦2500 + ₦3750) will give the same total as adding afternoon sales to morning sales (₦3750 + ₦2500).
Consider the number 1,985. What is the place value of the digit '9'? If you needed to arrange the numbers 234, 198, 301, and 299 in ascending order (smallest to largest), what would that order be?
